Avoiding pitfalls: what to look for when renting your first flat

Sharing

What with the condition of the accommodation, fraudulent ads and the mountains of paperwork required, renting your first flat can be a real challenge. To avoid ending up in a flat that's totally wrong for you, here are some common pitfalls you'll want to avoid, so you can rent your first flat with total peace of mind.

Check everything in detail before renting your flat

You've just spotted an ad for the flat of your dreams! This flat is apparently in great condition and has everything you need. To work out if it's really a good deal, go through the flat with a fine-tooth comb. When you go to the viewing, there are important details to consider. Make sure you:

  • Check how much light the flat gets
  • Listen carefully to see how good the sound insulation is
  • Run your hand over the edges of the windows to check for draughts
  • Turn on the electrics to make sure everything is working (if the flat is furnished)
  • Turn on the taps to check the water pressure and the condition of the pipes
  • Look at windows, walls and even mirrors to gauge the humidity level

To take it a step further, check if the flat is close to shops and public transport. If you're thinking of renting a furnished student flat, then also take a look at the condition of the furniture (bed size, table stability, condition of the desk chair...).

Sort out your paperwork before you rent your first flat

To successfully rent your first flat, you have to prepare all the right paperwork for student accommodation. Read the lease contract carefully. All charges and the rental price are mentioned on this form. Also, take out home insurance and don't forget to open a water meter account. As a student, you don't want to end up with an unexpected large lump sum to pay.

To avoid all these pitfalls and rent a comfortable, well-equipped and secure flat: choose one of our Nemea Appart'Etud residences.
