Student residence and university residence: what are the differences?

It's time for you to fly the family nest and you've just realised that there's a load of things you need to do? Yes, sorting accommodation is one of those things. When you do your research, two main options stand out: private student residences or university residences. But what are the real differences?
Comparison: private student residence or university residence?
University residences are public housing assistance establishments managed by the CROUS, and intended for low-income students. These residences have the advantage of being competitively priced and located close to the place of study.
But to get one, hang on. You have to put together a whole file and be successfully selected! Unfortunately, it is increasingly difficult to find a place in a university residence, as there aren't many available and students are classified according to specific social criteria.
As you can imagine, the services offered by university residences are much more basic than in private residences, particularly because of the price (we know, you can't have everything!). The rooms are often a small 10 m² and the sanitary facilities and kitchens are usually shared. So expect your neighbours to have a different definition of cleanliness to you, and to be walking around the corridors with your toilet roll tucked under your arm.
Private student residences are completely different, especially when it comes to getting one. Of course, the rent is higher than in a university residence, but they're also more comfortable and offer many more services.
Living in a private student residence: independence and comfort
Do you dream of total independence? Private student residences will certainly suit you. Everything has been set up so you have as little to worry about as possible! The apartments are self-contained, fully equipped and furnished with everything from a spoon to a hob, a desk and a sofa bed.
Various collective services are included in the price: reception, a supply of household linen, cleaning of the premises, security.. (rather reassuring if you're living alone for the first time!) In some residences, you even have access to a bicycle room, parking, laundry, gym, etc.
Just like the university residences, you can apply for the Allocation de Logement Social (ALS) housing assistance from the CAF.
